Move over Stacy and Clinton, Tim Gunn is here!
I’ll admit, I was super dubious of Bravo’s new style makeover show starring the beloved Project Runway guru after skimming through a few chapters of his book, “Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style.” The textbook version is very dry and droll in that signature Tim Gunn way — which would be excellent if only you could actually hear Gunn deliver every concise and deliberate word. Alas, on paper, it just fell flat.
So I was pleasantly surprised and relieved to see Gunn spring back to life on the screen. Wednesday night’s sneak preview was thoroughly enjoyable, though I have to say, their subject Karen Vito was too MONEY! The 40ish mom had a serious addition to hoochie-mama attire:
“I have to look sexy.”
“This doesn’t give me any cleavage.”
“I need to look hot.”
Ahem, hi Karen, are you sure you’re not from OC?? She seriously could have stepped right off the “Real Housewives of OC” show. True to form, Gunn uttered a constant stream of razor sharp remarks in that trademark debonair tone. How much do I love his uppity and bitchy but spot-on criticisms?
“This is untenable.”
“This is very vulgar. So vulgar.”
“Slutty? Yes, but you’re less of a slut than you were before.”
Gunn’s on-air sidekick, model Veronica Webb, was also charming but had her own stinging tongue, too. At one point, Karen had on a midriff-baring, sheer wrap-around top with a plunging neckline and tighter-than-tight white jeans. That provoked Webb to deliver my favorite line of the episode: “Straight up, this is ’stripper’. All you need is a pole.”
And when the style duo rightfully put her in more sophisticated clothes, what does Karen start doing? Crying! Dear God, lady.
Great TV. And you know what? As much as I like Stacy & Clinton, I have to say, “Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style” doesn’t drag on incessantly the way TLC’s “What Not to Wear” often does. Yay for Tim Gunn’s new show.
Catch tonight’s episode on Bravo. 10 p.m. Thursdays. Now, where’s my Project Runway, already?
